In Zone 5a during May, keep soil evenly moist but well-drained and avoid working it when wet. Watch for late cool snaps that can slow growth, and scout weekly for aphids and flea beetles on tender leaves.

Seed & Soil

Set out warm-season starts like Tomato and Bell Pepper once nights are reliably mild, and keep transplants shaded if a cold spell hits. Direct sow quick, heat-tolerant crops like Zucchini and Cucumber while the soil is warming, and sow Basil after frost risk passes.

The Harvest

Harvest fruit and greens as they ripen: pick Bluecrop and Blueray berries frequently for best flavor. Continue harvesting apples like Honeycrisp and Golden Delicious, and take Sweet when fully colored and firm.
