Expert Note

May in Zone 5b warms quickly, so keep soil evenly moist until plants root. Use compost and mulch to steady moisture, and watch for early aphids and flea beetles on tender leaves; row cover helps if nights are still cool.

Seed & Soil

In May, transplant or start warm-season favorites like Tomato and Bell Pepper once nights are reliably above cool temperatures. Direct sow quick, heat-loving crops like Green Zucchini and Sweet Corn while soil is warming, and add Basil after the risk of frost passes.

The Harvest

Harvest is active: pick Strawberry and Blueberry as they ripen, and continue with Apple varieties like Honeycrisp and Golden Delicious when fully colored. For greens, harvest Winter Bloomsdale leaves selectively for best regrowth.
